According to an ESPN.com report, NFL executive vice-president Eric Grubman, in a radio interview with ESPN 970-AM in Pittsburgh, summed up the situation in which some fans lost their seats at Super Bowl XLV as “awful”. Grubman also admitted the league “made the best of it” but “we screwed it up. I can’t change that”. ESPN contended “temporary seats at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, weren’t ready in time, forcing some fans to move and others to watch from standing-room spots”. The incident has already resulted in at least two lawsuits. The Super Bowl seating gaffe is a reminder for sports organizations to possess a written policy, procedure, plan or protocol addressing the following athletics event-management-related issues:
•Security and law enforcement.
•Legal compliance (e.g., ADA).
•Health and safety.
•Major catastrophe/disaster/contingency plan.
•Crowd control and safety.
•Stage, electrical, broadcast and other equipment plan, set-up and break-down.
