New NCAA Rules Update: Limitation on Duties of Weight or Strength Coaches

On March 16, 2011, the NCAA adopted Proposal No. 2010-19 for the Football Bowl Subdivision that amends Specifically, the proposal specifies “that not more than five weight or strength coaches are permitted to work with a football program in any capacity, including all workouts (required or voluntary), practices and game-related activities”. The new rule is effective August 1, 2012. The stated rationale of the proposal “to establish limitations on the number of noncoaching staff members with sport specific responsibilities in football” since “recently, the membership and the NCAA Division I Board of Directors have expressed concern regarding the proliferation of these individuals and the impact on competitive equity within the sport”, including “competitive equity concerns exist as it relates to the use of weight or strength coaches”. Institution should: a) educate football coaching staffs concerning the new rule; and b) enhance monitoring activities to ensure compliance with the new legislation.
