According to CNN, former Syracuse University assistant basketball coach Bernie Fine’s wife Laurie Fine will release a statement today challenging the implications of a tape recording of a 2002 telephone conversation she had with former Syracuse University ball boy Bobby Davis, one of her husband’s accusers. The tape allegedly reveals that Laurie Fine had knowledge of the sexual abuse of boys by her husband. The tape was originally given to the Syracuse Post-Standard by Davis but was not published because the newspaper could not corroborate the evidence or find an additional accuser. Laurie Fine, at the time the tape was released to the Post-Standard, suggested that Davis, who had taped her on multiple occasions, edited the recordings to make them appear more inflammatory.
Based on the recent Penn State and Syracuse University stories, the Michael L. Buckner Law Firm recommends institutions: (1) implement clear and consistent policies and procedures for reporting alleged criminal violations to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; and (2) provide university employees with education on reporting protocols.
