The NCAA Division I Board of Directors will reconsider legislation allowing schools to award athletics scholarships for more than one year at the board’s January 14th meeting due to the required number of schools requesting an override of the rule.
The multiyear scholarship legislation was adopted following NCAA President Mark Emmert’s presidential retreat this past August. The purpose of the legislation was to prioritize student-athlete well-being by guaranteeing their education would continue regardless of injury, athletic performance or coaching staff changes. The schools disagreeing with the legislation cited that athletics aid should be awarded the same way non-athletics aid is awarded, which is primarily on an annual basis.
