Hazing Still a Concern in Prep Sports

On January 15, 2012, Andy Hamilton published an article in the Des Moines Register regarding bullying and hazing in scholastic sports. Elliot Hopkins, director of educational services for the National Federation of State High School Associations, believes hazing has “always been about power and control.” Hopkins added, “and if you really want to be part of my team or group, or club, and I’m in charge or have power controlling, I can force my will upon you.”

The article should serve as a reminder to high school administrators that hazing is a serious issue that should be addressed through: (1) establishing school policies and procedures regarding hazing; (2) conducting educational sessions for staff members and students regarding hazing; and (3) implementing National Federation of State High School Associations materials regarding hazing at your school. These materials can be found here.

Hamilton’s full article can be found here.
