On March 14, 2012, Patrick Hruby, a culture writer for the Washington Times, published an article in the Atlantic, calling for men’s college basketball student-athletes to “unite” and go on strike during the 2012 NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.
Hruby stated, “change is needed. That much is certain. The status quo is unfair, untenable, and downright un-American.” In advocating change, Hruby suggested, “the quickest, surest way to apply force is through an athlete strike.” Hruby, is one among many writers, arguing for student-athletes to receive “their full and free market value”, which is arguably much higher than the cost of an athletic scholarship.
