New Division I Interpretation: Notification of Summer Financial Aid Award

On May 31, 2012, the academic and membership affairs staff issued an interpretation concerning notification of summer financial aid awards to student-athletes. Specifically, the staff confirmed that “an institution that is providing a financial aid award to a student-athlete for attendance at the institution’s summer session is not required to provide the recipient with a written statement of the amount, duration, conditions or terms of the award.”

This interpretation referenced NCAA Division I Bylaws 15.2.8 (summer financial aid), (written statement requirement), official interpretation (10/14/1992, Item No. 5-c-(4)) which has been archived.

In light of this interpretation, the Michael L. Buckner Law Firm recommends institutions’ athletics compliance include the interpretation in the next scheduled rules-education session for the athletics staff and coaches.
