The NCAA Review: Maria Elena Perez and Student-Athlete Meals

• The Florida Bar filed ethics charges with the Florida Supreme Court against Maria Elena Perez, the attorney who represented booster Nevin Shapiro and assisted the NCAA obtain evidence during the University of Miami enforcement case. The Florida Bar alleged Perez committed 15 violations of Bar rules during her provision of legal services to the NCAA for the investigation that resulted in postseason bans and a loss of scholarships at UM. • The NCAA Division I Legislative Council passed legislation that permits student-athletes to receive unlimited meals and snacks in conjunction with their athletics participation. The rule, which must be approved by the Division I Board of Directors, would apply to walk-ons, as well as scholarship student-athletes.
